Corrientes was founded by the pioneer Juan Torres de Vera y Aragon, on April 3, 1588 under the name of San Juan de Vera. The Seven Streams of the full name is due to the peculiar geography of the coast, marked by seven points or peninsulas that enter the river, causing strong currents make navigation difficult.
